Evidence to support learning outcome: Learner Led Seminar
Reflection to Support Evidence:
For our Learner Led Seminar, we combined a variety of different online tools to teach the members or our cohort strategies for dealing with information overload. We first created a Word document that contained the objectives for our week of instruction, a calendar of events and links to other materials/tools that were needed to complete the required tasks. We also created a survey using Fluidsurvey that investigated information overload from two perspectives: that of an online facilitator and also from being a student enrolled in an online course. The results were then tabulated and displayed in an infographic using a web site called Piktochart. And finally, all of this information was collated and enhanced by including Karen Kear’s perspective on Too Much Information from our required reading by creating a slideshow in Google Slides. Our presentation contained a variety of different sources of information yet it was still manageable because of the online tools that we chose.
From our presentation, three things struck me. First of all, I was surprised at the amount of time that was required to plan and organize a week’s worth of learning. Once the objectives were set into place, our group then needed to find engaging activities and a selection of articles on our topic. Once everything was formalized, then we created the document that was to be sent to the cohort. From these steps, I learnt the importance of communicating instructions in a succinct yet clear manner so that the information was easy to follow. Another learning moment came from the variety of different online tools that can be used to present different types of information. I helped design an online survey for the cohort by using Fluidsurvey. This tool was useful and easy to use at collecting data. The results were then displayed in a pictogram and then presented in Google Docs. Online tools are vast but our group was quick to assess which ones would best suit our needs. Lastly, the experience of facilitating online will continue to be a learning process for myself. It is not something that I do daily so every time I present to the cohort, I continue to grow as an online facilitator. Overall, this process brought together many different aspects required to be an effective facilitator.
I find that this particular project was very important in my personal development as an online facilitator. Creating a lesson, finding new materials and then creating a document that explains the expectations to the students is a daily occurrence for any online teacher. Making these documents showed me what it would be like to develop course materials from scratch for an online course. The use of online tools was also very practical at diversifying the ways that the materials could be presented to my students. Engaging lessons require a unique approach to lesson development so that students find the process interesting and manageable. Participating in the learner led seminar allowed me to see what facilitating online would look like versus teaching in the traditional classroom.

Evidence of Learning: Final Project Reflective Practice in Action (Prezi)
Reflection to Support Evidence:
For our final project in OLTD 503, we were asked to create an artifact that would demonstrate our experience of effective online communication. For this task, we created a slide show using the online tool, Prezi. Within the Prezi, we imbedded several other forms of documents to support our ideas. Some of the materials that we attached were PDF documents of the work we had completed earlier in the course or screen shots of materials presented in D2L. We also used video from YouTube and placed it into our Prezi and finally, we collected images from the Internet to enhance the look of our presentation. In the end, our final product for OLTD 503 was a compilation of information researched online line with a variety of other different pieces of supporting evidence all integrated into a Prezi slide show.
From this process, I learnt how to use effectively a new online tool that I could implement into my daily practices. I have never created a Prezi prior to this project although I have wanted to try to do so previously. This project seemed to fit nicely with this format; therefore, we decided to go down this path. At first, the program was not that intuitive and I had difficulties getting the pieces of the presentation onto the backdrop so that the information was presented in a logical manner. With same patience and sometime invested in watching some instructional videos on YouTube, the pieces started to come together. In the end, I was pleased with the final product and would use Prezi again.
This project was important because it allowed me to investigate three different aspects of effective online communication: best practices, online tools and building online virtual communities. I feel that these three areas are critical to creating and maintaining a successful online classroom. Best practices are needed to give purpose and a guiding framework in the creation and development of curriculum. Online tools are necessary to create engaging and diversified lessons that meet the needs of the online learner. And lastly, building online virtual communities are important so that the isolation does not occur and the student feels connected to the instructor and to others sharing the same learning experience. Researching these three different paths of online learning has help me construct my personal philosophy and has shaped by values of what an effective online classroom should look like.
