Reflection to Support Evidence:
As one of the pieces for our tool assessment project in OLTD 506 (Social Media), we were asked to create an elective piece. I chose to create a backgrounder which is an informative handout given to parents to educate them of the risks and issues that might arise from using a Social Media tool in the classroom. The backgrounder usually accompanies a consent form prior to using a tool, such as Pinterest, with students. The backgrounder for this course was made using Microsoft Word. It describes in detail the intended tool of use, the rationale behind using Pinterest for educational purposes and it also discusses the risks (placing too much personal information online, recommended age restrictions and server location of stored information). The purpose of the backgrounder is to provide adequate information so that the parent/guardian signing a consent form is fully aware of any possible issues that might arise.
Having not used a lot of Social Media tools in my class, this project made me very aware of the possible problems that might occur when using Web 2.0 tools that have the ability to connect young students to a global community. One of the issues that may arise pertains to an individual’s privacy. Students should not be creating profiles that include any identifiable information. This includes things such as last names, location and personal photos. Privacy does not just include creating and maintaining a profile page on Pinterest, it also deals with the information that is stored on the Pinterest server. Any materials/boards created in Pinterest, are stored outside of Canada. This can have implications on a person’s privacy because it is the location of the server that dictates the privacy laws that will be followed. In the case of Pinterest, the server is in the US and therefore, the lack luster privacy laws of the US would be used to guide any proceedings. And lastly, this project required me to be educated on my school district’s policies and procedures for using Social Media. Prior to this project, I had a vague idea of these policies but it was worthwhile digging through them to see the expectations of user’s appropriate use of devices and other relevant procedures. After creating the backgrounder, I had a fuller appreciation of the possible pitfalls that might occur from using Pinterest but at the same time, I now had a document on how to deal with these issues.
This outcome is important to me because one of my current goals is to increase the amount of technology in my classes. Prior to this project, I would have given my students instructions on how to use the tool but would not have spent the time on teaching them how to be a responsible digital citizen. Now that I am aware some of the possible issues that may occur from using Pinterest, I would defiantly slow down the process and make sure my students, and their parents, are fully informed of the possible downside of using Social Media in the classroom. I feel confident, that in the future, I and my students will be well educated prior to starting a project using a Social Media tool.
OLTD Learning Outcomes:
- Create assessment and evaluation methods/tools most suitable to the strengths and challenges of online environments
- Critically assess and evaluate resources for best practice in online learning
Evidence to support learning outcome:
- Parent Backgrounder for Pinterest

b. 506- Outcome and Evidence

Evidence to support learning outcome:
Screen cast using Screencast-o-matic of a Prezi presentation
Reflection to Support Evidence:
For my final reflection of OLTD 506 Social Media, I decided to make a screen cast of my take away moments for the course. For this project, I created a Prezi that included screen captures of some of my pieces from the weekly assignments and other images were made using Wordle. Once the images to demonstrate knowledge were created, I then inserted them into a Prezi template of climbing a mountain to act as a metaphor of my learning journey. Once this step was done, I created a voice over as I walked through the presentation by using Screencast-o-matic. The entire project was then posted to my Weebly site to share with my peers.
From this entire process, I learnt that I was very naïve at the beginning of the course in regards to implementing Social Media tools into the classroom. As we journey through the course, we touched on the boundaries such as digital footprint, privacy, the digital divide and professionalism. While exploring these topics, I soon realized that students should not be placed on a computer without being properly informed and educated on problems that could possibly arise from connecting to the global community while using the internet. As we progressed in the course, I also explored the appropriate use and social media policies for my school district. This assisted me in creating a backgrounder and a consent form. Putting all of these pieces together help me move away from naivety and shifted me towards becoming a Social Media Ninja.
These learning outcomes were important to me because they impact my daily teaching practices. My goal, throughout this program, is increase the amount and types of technology in my classes. Recently, I have investigated using Pinterest with my students. Prior to this class, I would have simply booked some computer time and would have had them create the desired project. I now realize that my students need to be educated on privacy issues about server and data storage, placing personal information on the internet and the implications of creating a digital footprint with every click of the mouse. This course will change my current teaching practices to help safe guard my students.
OLTD Learning Outcome:
- Critically assess and evaluate resources for best practice in online learning
- Understand, design and commit to student success in online learning environments
- Become familiar with common terms, definitions and elements related to online environments
